Breathing Light - Where Monks used to Pray while the Devil was Watching
Where monks lived a secluded life of contemplation, austerity and hard labour - all in praise of God - clearly the Devil could not have been far away. And indeed he used to sit just across the river, high up at Devil's Pulpit, watching out closely for opportunities to tempt the monks and to snatch the poor souls of those who gave in to his cajoling. So goes the legend, anyway.
An arcadian setting like this valley is a location that Cistercians would typically choose for founding a new abbey. It seems as though a scenery of such lovely and idyllic nature inevitably calls for some contrasting sinister element.
And yet the place is breathing light...
